Advertiser Content Policy

Halal ads for a halal space

People choose Battut because they want a space built on Islamic values. Every ad is held to that standard, and every ad is reviewed by a Battut admin before it runs. This policy covers everything in an ad: text, images, video, audio, the business name and logo, and the page it links to.

1. Principles

  • Halal only. What you advertise must be permissible to buy, sell and use under the general consensus of Islamic scholarship.
  • Truthful. Islam forbids deceiving people in trade. Claims must be honest and provable.
  • Modest. Imagery and language must respect modesty (haya’) for men and women.
  • Respectful of choices. People who chose to hide women in imagery do not see ads that show women.
  • Reviewed by people. Automated checks help, but a Battut admin decides on every ad.

2. Prohibited content

Ads must not promote, sell, depict or link to any of the following. The name of each category is what our reviewers cite when an ad is turned down.

  • Alcohol and intoxicants: alcoholic drinks (including alcohol-branded “non-alcoholic” drinks), bars, drugs and anything that intoxicates.
  • Interest-based (riba) finance: conventional loans, credit cards, overdrafts, buy-now-pay-later with interest, conventional mortgages, conventional insurance, payday loans, interest-bearing savings, forex and CFD trading, binary options, and investments promising guaranteed returns.
  • Gambling and lotteries: casinos, betting, lotteries, paid raffles, prize draws that need a purchase, loot boxes, games of chance and speculative schemes that work like gambling.
  • Music in ad audio: no musical instruments of any kind, including background music, jingles, beats and instrument-like effects. Allowed: spoken voice, voice-only nasheed, natural sounds and sound effects.
  • Immodest imagery: exposed ‘awrah, tight, sheer or revealing clothing, suggestive poses, and intimacy between non-mahram men and women.
  • Adult or sexual content: sexual products or services, innuendo, nudity and adult entertainment.
  • Tobacco and vaping: cigarettes, cigars, shisha, vapes, e-liquids and nicotine products.
  • Astrology, fortune-telling and magic: horoscopes, tarot, palm reading, sihr, protective amulets and talismans, and “spiritual healing” beyond ruqyah from the Quran and Sunnah.
  • Non-halal food or products: pork, non-halal meat, food or cosmetics with alcohol or haram ingredients, and places that serve them.
  • Dating and casual relationships: dating apps, “meet singles” services, companionship or escort services, and relationships outside marriage.
  • Weapons and explosives: firearms, ammunition, explosives, fireworks and weapons sold for harm.
  • Misleading or false claims: unprovable claims, fake scarcity or countdowns, fake reviews, miracle cures, get-rich-quick offers, MLM and pyramid schemes, hidden costs, clickbait, and fake buttons or system messages.
  • Impersonation: pretending to be another person, brand, scholar, government body or Battut, or using a name, likeness or logo without permission.
  • Political or sectarian content: parties, candidates, elections and campaigns, and content attacking any Muslim school of thought, sect or people.
  • Other policy issues: anything else that breaks Battut’s Terms of Service, Community Standards or the law where the ad runs.

3. Restricted content (allowed with conditions)

These are allowed only when the conditions are met. Reviewers may ask for licences, certificates or registration numbers, and may limit where an ad runs.

  • Islamic finance and takaful: approved by a recognised Shariah board or regulator, with the certifying body named and no guaranteed profit. No conventional products in the ad or on its page.
  • Investment and digital assets: licensed providers and Shariah-screened products only, with clear risk statements. Speculative and leveraged trading is prohibited.
  • Food, restaurants and cosmetics: meat, restaurants and animal-derived products need a recognised halal certificate (for example JAKIM in Malaysia).
  • Health and supplements: registered where required; no claims to cure or prevent disease and no before/after body images.
  • Religious services and education: accurate and respectful; Hajj and Umrah agents must be licensed.
  • Charity and zakat: registered charities and zakat bodies only, with the registration number on the landing page.
  • Marriage services: for adults, with family (wali) involvement; no dating framing, no photos of women in previews, no romantic imagery.
  • Children: ads may not target children or use them to pressure parents. Battut Kids shows no ads.

4. Creative rules

  • No musical instruments: voice, voice-only nasheed, natural sounds and sound effects only. Silent video is fine.
  • Modest imagery: loose, non-transparent clothing for everyone; women covered except the face and hands. No suggestive poses or mixed-gender intimacy.
  • Declare women in imagery: every creative must say whether it shows women. Ads that show women, or that are not declared, are not shown to people who chose to hide women in imagery. A false answer breaks this policy.
  • Honest text: the headline, text and button must match the landing page. Prices include fees.
  • Your own identity: use your verified business name and logo. Changing a verified identity goes through Battut support.
  • Media uploaded to Battut: images and video are uploaded through the Battut Business portal. Media hosted elsewhere is not accepted.
  • Sponsored label: Battut labels every ad “Sponsored”. Ads must not hide or imitate it, or imitate posts, notifications or system screens.
  • Quran and hadith: may be quoted accurately and respectfully, never altered, used as a pun or used to cheapen them next to a price.

5. Landing page rules

The page your ad links to is part of the ad.

  • It uses https:// and works on a phone.
  • It matches the ad: same business, product, price and offer.
  • It follows this policy too: no prohibited products, no music that plays on its own, no immodest imagery.
  • No automatic downloads, pop-up chains, redirects to other sites or pages that are hard to leave.
  • If it collects personal data it shows a privacy policy, and never asks for passwords, card details or ID numbers under false pretences.
  • A Battut profile, post or Khawater can also be the destination.

6. How ads are reviewed

  • 1. Submit. Nothing runs before review.
  • 2. Automated checks. Media and text are screened automatically. The results go to the reviewer; they never approve an ad on their own.
  • 3. Admin review. A Battut admin reviews every ad before it runs. Shariah Guards (community moderators) do not review ads.
  • 4. Decision. Approved, changes requested, limited or rejected. Anything other than approval names the policy categories above and gives a written reason in the Battut Business portal.
  • 5. Resubmit. Edit and submit again. Changing an approved ad’s text, media, link or women-imagery answer sends it back to review.
  • 6. After approval. Running ads can still be paused, limited or suspended if a problem is found later.

There is no guaranteed review time; most reviews take a few business days.

7. Paying for ads: Battut Tokens (BT) only

  • BT only. Ads are paid only in Battut Tokens (BT), the same in-app currency people earn on Battut. The BT comes from the business owner’s own balance.
  • BT is not money. BT cannot be bought with money, sold, transferred outside Battut or cashed out, and has no cash value. There are no cash top-ups.
  • Charged only on delivery. By the ad set’s bid type: per 1,000 impressions, per click, or per video view (at least 2 seconds of play). Battut’s servers count delivery; duplicate and automated events are not charged.
  • Out of BT. When the owner’s balance cannot cover the next charge, the business’s ads stop showing until there is enough BT.
  • Price at approval. The price of an ad is its bid, or the default rates on the day it was approved.

8. Refunds and the verification subscription

  • No cash refunds. BT was never paid for with money, so there is nothing to refund in cash.
  • Invalid traffic. BT charged for invalid traffic (bots, fraud, double counting or a Battut error) is returned to the owner’s balance as BT. Write to us within 30 days of the charge.
  • Delivered is final. BT spent on delivery that really happened is not returned, including when an ad is later found to break this policy.
  • Verification subscription. Business verification is a separate subscription billed in money by Stripe, which issues the invoices (including SST where it applies). Cancel at any time in the Battut Business portal; it stays active until the end of the paid period, then ends, and the business’s ads stop.

9. Enforcement

  • Ads: ads that break this policy are rejected, or suspended if already running.
  • Businesses: repeated or serious violations (knowingly advertising prohibited products, false identity, or a false women-imagery answer) can suspend the business and all its ads.
  • Owners: if the owner’s Battut account is banned, every business they own is suspended and its ads stop.
  • Viewers: anyone can hide an ad and tell us why. These signals help us find ads that need another look.

Changes

Battut may update this policy. The date at the top shows the current version, and running ads must follow it.
